A Beitbridge man has been ordered to contribute $100 towards the upkeep of his children following a maintenance dispute dispute that spilt into the courts.

Kgomotso Mbedzi appeared before Magistrate Mbonisi Kaweni, seeking for financial support from Blessed Ndou for the care of their two children aged 14, and 7.

In her submission, Mbedzi told the court that she is employed as a security guard, earning a monthly salary of ZIG 5000, insufficient to meet the children’s needs.

She requested for $450 per month from Ndou, citing expenses such as school fees, transport, rent, and extra lessons.

Mbedzi also raised concerns over Ndou’s conduct, alleging that he visits her residence without her consent and requested that such visits must stop.

In response, Ndou told the court that he is currently unemployed, having previously worked at a local Insurance company.

He said he was unable to meet the $450 monthly maintenance demanded but expressed willingness to support his children.

Ndou offered to contribute towards school fees and proposed paying $80 per month as maintenance fee.

The court heard that Ndou also has another family, including an 11-year-old child, which he supports.

In his ruling, Kaweni said that both parents have a legal obligation to provide for their children. He described Ndou’s offer as reasonable under the circumstances.

The court subsequently ordered Ndou to pay $100 per month in maintenance and to cover school fees for two of the children.

The order will continue until the children reachs the age of 18 and are self-supporting.
