WHO will police the police?

That is the question people at the Beitbridge Regional Court were left asking themselves when a Gwanda policeman Leonard Mushava was arraigned for transporting or dealing with Mbanje and Broncleer.

Allegations against Mushava, 35, and his companion, Oprah Nomagugu Ndabambi, 27, were that on January 3, 2026 and at Bubi the two were intercepted by members of the National Task Force Against Smuggling and Cross-border crime at Bubi.

They had, for their first joint count, an assortment 1050x100mls of Astra Pain cough syrup and 1600x100mls of broncleer cough syrup suppressant containing codeine in excess of 5mg without a prescription in contravention of Zimbabwean laws.

On their second joint count Mashava and Ndavambi, of 335 Spirtskop, Gwanda and a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police stationed at CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit Gwanda and house number 1142 Mandava, Zvishavane respectively were found with 155 cobs of Mbanje.

The two carried their alleged contraband in a silver Toyota Hilux registration number AGP 8970 with Mushava driving.

Regional magistrate Charity Maphosa remanded the two to January 17 for trial.

They are in custody.

Wilbrought Muleya prosecuted while Runganga of Tanaka Law Chambers of Bulawayo represented Mushava and Ndabambi.
