Two Harare City Council employees Peter Muwonde (41) and Tapiwa Bere (40), have been convicted of assault and fined US$200 each for attacking a street vendor Shepherd Mavhiza.

The incident occurred when Mavhiza was selling books at the corner of Bute and Rezende Street in Harare.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Mavhiza fled the scene after hearing someone shout “Kanzuru!” (Council!), fearing arrest.

Muwonde who was driving a council vehicle chased and apprehended Mavhiza, assaulting him with open hands and clenched fists before throwing him into the vehicle. Bere then joined in, striking Mavhiza multiple times with a baton stick.
