THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service Male Inmates Chess team successfully defended their continental title after winning gold at the 2nd Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners on Tuesday.

The contest was held under the global FIDE Chess for Freedom programme.

Zimbabwe’s women’s team also delivered a strong performance, securing silver after finishing second behind Ghana.

The latest triumph cements Zimbabwe’s growing reputation as Africa’s leading correctional chess nation.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service hailed the achievement as another milestone for the country’s prison rehabilitation programme.

“Zimbabwe has once again stamped its authority on African correctional chess after the male team successfully defended their continental title while the women’s side produced a spirited performance to claim silver,” the statement read.

The men’s team produced a dominant display throughout the tournament, showcasing tactical skill, discipline and resilience to retain the continental crown.

The women’s side also impressed, finishing runners-up to a strong Ghanaian team and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s consistency in correctional chess competitions.

According to ZPCS, the success reflects the strength of its Chess Development Programme, which has become one of the region’s most active rehabilitation initiatives.

Beyond online international tournaments, the service also hosts Zimbabwe’s largest domestic over-the-board correctional chess competition in Bulawayo. The annual tournament brings together inmates, correctional officers and members of the public to promote integration, rehabilitation and intellectual development through sport.

This year’s edition is scheduled for June 27 and 28 at Khami Complex.

ZPCS said Zimbabwe’s participation in the continental championship was supported by Minerva Risk Advisors, which provided essential data gadgets, and Prison Outreach for its continued backing of rehabilitation and empowerment programmes.

The correctional chess programme has also benefited from long-standing support from the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, which has provided chess equipment, technical guidance, training resources and mentorship.

ZPCS said the partnership has strengthened correctional chess standards across the country and helped position Zimbabwe as a formidable force in continental and global prison chess competitions.

“For Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, chess is far more than a game. It is a powerful tool for rehabilitation, discipline, strategic thinking and personal transformation,” the service said.

Zimbabwe first dominated the inaugural Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners in May 2025, when the men’s team finished unbeaten with six wins and one draw.

That performance earned the team qualification for the World Intercontinental Championship, where Zimbabwe finished fourth globally.
