Ms. Amy Pope, the Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), met with His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare yesterday. This visit marks the first time in the 73-year history of the IOM that a Director General has travelled to Zimbabwe.
During the courtesy call, Ms. Pope emphasized the significance of Zimbabwe’s role in addressing migration issues, both within the region and globally.
“I am here because of the importance of the country and Government in responding to the issue of migration,” she stated.
Following the meeting, Ms. Pope briefed the press about the key topics discussed.
“We explored opportunities for people to migrate through resident pathways, enabling them to seize the job prospects that exist regionally and globally to support their families,” she explained.
Additionally, she highlighted the need for engaging with the diaspora, noting the benefits of welcoming back those who have migrated.
“We can leverage their financial resources, skills, and networks to benefit the people of Zimbabwe,” she added.
Ms. Pope also praised the leadership of the Zimbabwean government in addressing global crisis and conflicts, particularly regarding the challenges faced by the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
She acknowledged President Mnangagwa’s role as chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and praised his efforts in promoting peace throughout the region.
The visit underscores the IOM’s commitment to collaborating with Zimbabwe as it navigates complex migration dynamics especially in the SADC region ensuring that both migrant communities and the nation benefit from effective policies and practices.
