James Earl Jones, the legendary actor renowned for his powerful voice as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise and Mufasa in The Lion King, passed away on Monday morning, September 9, 2024, at his home in Dutchess County, New York. He was 93 years old.
His agent confirmed the news, stating that Jones died surrounded by family. He is survived by his son, Flynn Earl Jones. His wife, Cecilia Hart, passed away in 2016.
Jones’s voice became synonymous with some of cinema’s most memorable characters. He famously voiced Darth Vader, bringing a menacing presence to the iconic villain, and Mufasa, the wise and loving father in Disney’s The Lion King.
Reflecting on his dual roles, Jones once remarked, “I never made much money off the Darth Vader part… I considered it merely a special effects job”
Throughout his illustrious career, Jones won numerous accolades, including two Tony Awards, an honorary Oscar, and a Grammy. He was also known for his roles in films such as Coming to America, Field of Dreams, and The Hunt for Red October
Fans and colleagues have expressed their sorrow at his passing. Mark Hamill, who portrayed Luke Skywalker, shared on social media, “#RIP dad,” alongside a heartfelt tribute to his late co-star.
