The United Nations has strongly condemned an Israeli airstrike that resulted in the deaths of six of its local staff members in the Gaza Strip.
The attack targeted a UN-run facility in the southern part of the Palestinian territory.
According to the UN, the victims were all employees of the organization’s relief agency, UNRWA, working to provide crucial humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
They were killed when Israeli warplanes bombed the compound, which also housed a school for Palestinian refugees.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as a “grave violation of international law,” and has demanded a thorough investigation into the attack while urging Israel to ensure the safety of all UN personnel operating in the region.
“These brave individuals were dedicated humanitarians who worked tirelessly to support the people of Gaza Their lives were tragically cut short, and the United Nations mourns their devastating loss.” Gatress said
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the airstrike. However, tensions have been high in Gaza in recent weeks following a series of clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militant groups.
This latest incident is likely to further strain the already tense relationship between Israel and the United Nations, which has long been critical of the Jewish state’s treatment of the Palestinians.
The UN has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade of Gaza and a just resolution to the ongoing conflict. –original copy @BBC NEWS
