Sibongiseni Mfanaso Mpofu, 28, has been apprehended by ZRP Lupane in connection with a brutal attack on 72 year old Christine Ncube. Mpofu allegedly struck Ncube with an axe and set her on fire after accusing her of witchcraft.
According to police reports, Mpofu allegedly attacked Christine Ncube with an axe, striking her on the head.
“Mpofu allegedly struck Christine Ncube (72) with an axe on the head, he then poured paraffin on the complainant before setting her on fire,” said the Police in a statement.
The motive behind the attack was reportedly Mpofu’s suspicion that Ncube had bewitched him.
Fortunately, villagers nearby responded swiftly, rescuing Ms. Ncube from the flames. She sustained severe burns and was initially taken to St Luke’s Hospital. Due to the extent of her injuries, she was subsequently transferred to Mpilo Hospital for specialized treatment.
Authorities have detained Mpofu and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
