Harare, Zimbabwe – The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) and the Health Professions Authority (HPA) have issued a warning to the public about the illegal sale, purchase, and use of Ozempic, a prescription medication commonly known as the “skinny jab.”

Originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, Ozempic is increasingly being misused for weight loss, posing serious health risks. In a joint statement, MCAZ Director-General Richard Rukwata expressed concern over the rise in the illegal distribution of the drug through unapproved channels.

“Recent findings show a growing trend of Ozempic being used for weight loss without medical oversight. Such practices can be hazardous and may result in severe health issues,” Rukwata said in a statement.

He emphasized that Ozempic must only be obtained with a valid prescription and under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Using the drug without proper guidance can lead to dangerous and potentially life-threatening complications.

Authorities advised the public to avoid purchasing Ozempic from unauthorized sources, including online platforms, social media, unlicensed vendors, or unregistered individuals. Such sources often lack quality control, increasing the risk of counterfeit or substandard medicines.

Rukwata warned that engaging in the illegal trade of medicines is a criminal offense punishable by law.

“Selling medicines without proper licensing from unapproved locations violates several sections of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Regulations and the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act,” he stated.

The HPA also reinforced that diagnosis and prescribing should only be carried out by licensed health professionals. Both agencies urged the public to seek medical advice exclusively from registered practitioners and accredited health facilities.

“To protect public health, individuals are advised to verify the credentials of health practitioners and institutions before seeking treatment,” the statement concluded.
