Binga, Zimbabwe – Former cabinet minister Joel Gabbuza is fighting for his life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo following a brutal attack by a love rival in Binga last Friday night, police confirmed.

Gabbuza sustained deep cuts to his head and hands during the assault, which occurred at the home of his mistress in Siamakwa Village, Ward 18.

Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that investigations are ongoing.

“We are investigating a case of assault where Mr. Joel Gabbuza was attacked by two suspects at a woman’s homestead in Tinde, Ward 18,” Nyathi said.

According to sources, Gabbuza, who is married, was involved in a long-term affair with the woman. The woman’s former boyfriend, who blamed Gabbuza for their breakup, reportedly did not accept the rejection.

The ex-boyfriend and an accomplice targeted Gabbuza under cover of darkness, first slashing the tires of his vehicle before forcing their way into the room where he and the woman were sleeping.

Gabbuza was stabbed more than a dozen times, suffering severe injuries to his head and hands.

He was bleeding heavily and was transported over 200 kilometers to Hwange Colliery Hospital, where he was stabilized before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital for specialist treatment.

Gabbuza, a former Binga South Member of Parliament and later a senator for Matabeleland North before his recall by Sengezo Tshabangu, remains in critical condition.
