As the country moves in to correct historical anomalies of failing to recognise and honour key sites in the history of Zimbabwe, President Mnangagwa is set to commission another war shrine, this time at Kamungoma in Gutu, Masvingo Province.
Kamungoma is a site where one Comrade Double Killer lost his life together with 104 unarmed civilians during a night vigil to the brutal Smith regime as it moved to quel the war of liberation
“The Kamungoma Massacre remains one of the most brutal attacks ever perpetrated by the Smith regime on civilians inside the then Rhodesia that attracted international condemnation, ” said a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage through National Museums and Monument of Zimbabwe and the local community have immortalized the place where this heinous crime was committed for posterity.”
The commissioning of the monument is coming 13 days before the country celebrates the Independence for which these brave patriots paid the supreme sacrifice. It also comes soon after the launch of Pupu War Memorial which celebrated the heroic exploits of King Lobengula’s Regiment against Allan Wilson’s men.
The war shrine will be commissioned on the 4th of April marking another event to record Zimbabwe’s rich history.
