A 37-year-old police officer, Nomore Muradzikwa, was charged with the murder of fellow officer Cassandra Hove in a court appearance on yesterday.

The incident, which occurred on March 6, resulted in the tragic death of the mother of four and has raised serious concerns regarding police protocols.

Muradzikwa, who is stationed at Hillside Police Station, did not enter a plea when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube.

He has been remanded in custody until April 1, with the advice to seek bail at the High Court.

The hearing revealed details about the circumstances surrounding Hove’s death, which were presented by prosecutor Nkanyezi Xaba.

The court was informed that both Hove and Muradzikwa were part of a police task force pursuing armed robbery suspects in the Pumula South area.

The officers identified 26-year-old Fikile Ncube as a potential suspect and confronted him near the home of a local prophet at approximately 8:30 PM. During the encounter, Muradzikwa, armed with a CZ pistol, discharged his weapon, inadvertently hitting Ncube in the left elbow. The bullet subsequently ricocheted, striking Hove in the left breast and causing her death.

The firearm involved in the incident was recovered from Muradzikwa’s possession.

Hove’s family attended the court proceedings, expressing their distress and frustration regarding the police’s handling of the case.

They had learned of Muradzikwa’s appearance through media reports and criticized the police for failing to provide timely information about the investigation.

Muradzikwa is being represented by attorney Tinashe Tashaya as the legal proceedings continue.
