As the Government continues to find ways to cushion citizens against the impact of the ElNino induced drought, the Ministry of finance has announced the scrapping of Value Added Tax (VAT), on beef, pork and poultry products, the main source of proteins in the country that will improve food and nutritional intake.

The move will definitely ensure consumers save a couple of dollars from their meat budget and reverses an earlier decision by Government in the early days of 2024 courtesy of pronouncements in the 2024 budget.

ZANU PF Director of Information Farai Marapira hailed the decision by the Ministry of Finance as announced by its Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga.

“This significant policy shift offers several benefits. By lowering retail prices, these nutritious foods become more accessible, especially for lower-income families. Greater access to affordable meat can improve dietary habits and overall health, while increased demand for local meat products stimulates the agricultural sector and creates jobs.”

“Additionally, this move helps combat malnutrition and food insecurity, providing a crucial resource for those in need. The reduction in prices may also boost consumption and sales in the meat market, promoting healthier food choices over less nutritious alternatives,” he said.

In the bigger scheme of things, Marapira opines that this initiative demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving living standards and fosters a healthier population while supporting the local economy.
