Harare – The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s (ZRU) National Executive Board and National Executive Committee, citing persistent governance and leadership challenges that have tarnished the reputation of rugby in the country.
In a letter dated 4 September 2025 to the CEO of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, the SRC emphasized that the recommendation must be implemented by Friday, 5 September 2025. Failure to comply would require the ZRU to provide justification for why the SRC should not invoke section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (Chapter 25:15) by Monday, 8 September 2025.
“The incessant governance and leadership challenges bedeviling the Zimbabwe Rugby Union have ultimately brought the sport of rugby into disrepute,” the letter from SRC Director-General Eltah Nengomasha stated.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the Minister and Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, as well as senior officials within the ministry and the SRC Board of Commissioners.
This move comes amid growing concerns over the administration of rugby in Zimbabwe and is seen as a decisive intervention by the SRC to restore accountability and professionalism in the sport.
