Vhembe Stars Academy moved within four points of Matebeleland South Division 2 Pool A leaders Superstrikers FC after securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Boys FC in Gwanda over the weekend.
After a goalless but tightly contested first half, the Beitbridge-based outfit turned the game around with two inspired substitutions that delivered maximum points.
Last Ngirazi and Junior Chauke found the back of the net, keeping the Green Machines’ title hopes alive. The win lifted Vhembe to 34 points, level with Mawabeni, who hold a superior goal difference.
The Vhembe faithful celebrated the victory, with many hailing Ngirazi’s clinical finish and goalkeeper Selector Mutenda’s heroics. “Another clean sheet, another step closer to Superstrikers,” one supporter wrote, summing up the optimism in the camp.
Elsewhere, log leaders Superstrikers were held to a 1-1 draw by Jessie FC, with both sides dropping crucial points.
That result saw Jessie FC slip to fourth on the table with 33 points, just one behind Vhembe and last season’s runners-up Mawabeni.
