Warriors defender Devine Lunga ‘s team, Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a 3-2 aggregate loss to Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions league final in Cairo ensuring the champions league crown remain in the land of the Pharaohs.
Following a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld in South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns struggled to withstand the pressure from the Pyramids Cairo, conceding two goals away from home.
Sundowns were punished early by the DR Congo International Fiston Mayele before Ahmed Samy scored the second, following Sundowns ‘ failure to defend a set piece, which enabled Pyramids FC to secure their first Crown.
The African continent witnessed a new champion lifting a rebranded trophy as Pyramids FC raised the Egyptian flag high in continental football , following in the footsteps of the now former defending champions Al Ahly SC.
Since Sundowns won the CAF Champions league in 2016 , only Northern African clubs have won the title. Sundowns ‘strong performance this year had given many football fans hope that the trend will be broken and bring the title to Southern Africa. However Pyramids FC defied the odds and secured their first star.
