The government has launched a nationwide crackdown on overloaded trucks in a bid to protect Zimbabwe’s highways from damage and ensure road safety.
In a public notice on Thursday, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced that it will be strictly enforcing axle load regulations on all major highways, with immediate effect.
The move comes as the government invests heavily in upgrading key roads, including the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading of the Harare–Beitbridge Road and the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road.
The Ministry say overloading has been a major cause of early road damage, costing the nation millions in repairs.
“To protect this critical infrastructure and ensure its longevity, there will be zero tolerance for overloaded vehicles,” read part of the statement.
Truck operators found carrying loads beyond the legal limits will face heavy fines and penalties, authorities warned.
Enforcement teams will be stationed at checkpoints and weighbridges along key routes to monitor compliance.
Experts have long warned that overloaded trucks cause serious damage to road surfaces, leading to potholes, cracks, and structural failure.
The practice also poses safety risks to other motorists, particularly on long-distance routes.
The government is urging all transport operators and drivers to follow the stipulated axle load limits, stressing that compliance will help extend the lifespan of national infrastructure and reduce maintenance costs.
“Let us work together to protect our national infrastructure for a safer, more connected Zimbabwe,” the ministry said.
The enforcement campaign is part of broader efforts to modernize the country’s transport network and support economic growth under Vision 2030.
