WELTON Group of Schools produced impressive performances in rugby and hockey games during the Kyle Prep Winter Festival held in Masvingo last Saturday, June 6.
The school sent two teams in each discipline to compete against some of the country’s top schools, gaining valuable experience from the tournament.
Their Rugby first side opened with a 5-5 draw against Petra before holding hosts Kyle Prep A to a goalless draw. Later, they lost 12-7 to Hillcrest but finished strongly with a 10-10 draw against Murray McDougal School (MMS).
Wellton’s Colts Rugby team enjoyed an unbeaten campaign at the festival. The Colts drew 0-0 against Petra and 5-5 against Kyle Prep A before recording convincing 17-0 victories over both Hillcrest and MMS.
In hockey, the Wellton Fillies secured three wins from five matches they defeated Kyle Prep A 1-0, beat MMS 2-0 and overcame Kyle Prep B 3-0. The Fillies suffered defeats against Hippo Valley Estates and Hillcrest.
The Wellton Senior Hockey team also had a successful outing curing which they beat Hippo Valley Estates 1-0 and recorded four draws against Kyle Prep, Murray McDougal School, Hillcrest and MCS.
First Team Rugby coach Nyasha Moyo praised parents for their continued support throughout the competition.
“The support was encouraging learners to participate in sport, gain experience and adapt to competing against different schools in rugby and hockey,” he said.
Hockey coach Chigodora commended the young girls for their effort during their first matches of the season.
“The players performed well despite being new to competition this year,” he said, while thanking parents for their unwavering support.
Rugby coach Tapiwa Mutevere said the coaching staff had gained valuable lessons from the festival.
“We are looking forward to improving our skills and helping learners develop further in all sporting disciplines,” he said.
The festival provided Wellton athletes with an important platform to test themselves and prepare for future competitions.
