WELTON Group of Schools won two titles and finished second in the Seniors’ competition at the Netball Tournament held at Centenary School last Saturday.
The tournament attracted teams from Centenary, Portland, Convent, MCS, St Thomas, Whitestone, Oakleigh House, Centenary B, Goldridge, Masiyepambili, Petra, Wellton, Amazon, Reps and Carmel.
The Grade 3 team finished first after beating Oakleigh House 11-3 and Centenary 9-3 in the finals.
The Fillies also finished first after defeating Whitestone 13-6 before crushing MCS 14-1 in the final.
The Seniors finished second after losing 10-9 to Whitestone in a close final before beating Centenary 11-10.
Wellton players also collected four individual awards during the tournament.
Loveness Kunorubwe was named the Seniors’ Best Defender of the Tournament.
Vivian Mahosi won the Fillies’ Best Centre of the Tournament award.
Shannel Gweshero was named the Fillies’ Best Defender of the Tournament.
Kayla Moyo received the Grade 3 Best Defender of the Tournament award.
Centenary Headmistress Mrs Nyuke praised the players for producing high-quality netball throughout the tournament.

She said the standard of play was excellent and encouraged the teams to continue working hard ahead of the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) and make Matabeleland proud.
Wellton assistant netball coach Beaulla Gwatinyanya said the players performed well and brought home two shields and all the individual medals.
Fillies star Vivian Mahosi said she was happy to be named the tournament’s best centre and was proud to represent her school.
In another development the Wellton Group of Schools Colts boys’ soccer team finished third out of 15 schools at the Colts Soccer Tournament held at Carmel School on Friday, 26 June.
Wellton started the tournament strongly with a 5-0 victory over Riverdale in their opening group match.
The team then played to a goalless draw against Petra before beating St Thomas 2-0 to reach the semi-finals unbeaten.
Wellton’s hopes of reaching the final ended after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Petra in the semi-finals.
The boys bounced back in the third-place play-off with a convincing 2-0 win over hosts Carmel to secure the bronze medal.
Team Manager Tapiwa Mutevere said the tournament gave the players valuable experience and helped the coaches identify weaknesses, especially in defence.
” The team will work hard to improve their defending ahead of future competitions”, he said
Sports Director Savado Malunga praised the players for their good performances and thanked parents for their continued support throughout the season.
Player Tinaye Madare said, “I am proud of the team’s effort after finishing third out of 15 schools.”
Assistant Coach Nyasha Moyo also thanked parents for their sacrifices, saying their support makes it possible for the players to take part in weekend sports competitions.
