Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has donated a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser and US$250,000 in cash to Dr. Eunor Guti, the widow of the late ZAOGA founder Archbishop Ezekiel Guti.
Chivayo, a vocal ZANU PF supporter with a history of fraud and unresolved tender allegations, announced the gift on social media, framing it as a tribute to the late Archbishop and a gesture of gratitude to Dr. Guti. He described the donation as a celebration of the church’s “100 years of unmatched service.”
While some religious followers have applauded the gift, critics view it as part of Chivayo’s pattern of mixing ostentatious giving with calculated public relations to enhance his image among the ruling elite and religious institutions.
Observers note Chivayo’s strategic alignment with powerful entities, including the ruling party and influential churches, as potentially serving to bolster his own protection and legitimacy.
Dr. Guti has not publicly commented on the donation, which Chivayo stated was contingent on church board consent.
This latest gift adds to Chivayo’s history of public giveaways, often seen as attempts to project a benevolent image despite questions surrounding the source of his wealth and the transactional nature of his public acts.
