A woman has been granted a five-year protection order against her ex-husband after a court heard he repeatedly assaulted her and threatened her with a knife.

Patience Ndlovu was the applicant in a protection order application against Edmore Shumba, her ex-husband, who is the respondent in the matter. The case appeared before Provincial Magistrate Mbonisi Kaweni.

The court heard that Shumba was in default after he failed to appear. The magistrate asked whether he had been informed that he was required to be in court.

According to proceedings, Shumba ran away and refused to sign court papers.

Ndlovu told the court: “He always assaults me. He threatens me with a knife sometimes. He is refusing to give back my property and it is mine because we did not work for it together.”

In default, the application for a protection order was granted.

Shumba was barred from assaulting, threatening and holding onto Ndlovu’s property. The order will run for a period of five years.
