Zimbabwe Association of Freelance Journalists (ZAFJ) has dismissed one of its members for what the association termed ‘unconstitutional power seizure attempt.’

The entity intimated one of its former members, Steven Matenga, engaged in actions aimed at destabilizing the institution by attempting to fraudulently and unconstitutionally seize the powers of the standing committee.

“Following a thorough investigation into the allegations made against Mr. Matenga, it was discovered that his actions were in direct violation of ZAFJ’s established principles, core values, and governing constitution. His attempts to manipulate and usurp the powers vested in the standing committee were deemed a breach of trust and a threat to the democratic functioning of our organization,” said ZAFJ in a statement

The organisation reiterated its commitment to promoting professionalism and ethical behaviour within freelance journalists indicating the decision to dismiss Mr. Matenga was made unanimously by the ZAFJ executive board after carefully considering the evidence presented against him. The association’s standing committee remains intact and committed to fulfilling its mandate of representing and supporting freelance journalists across Zimbabwe
