In an effort that can be seen to be appeasing the growing discontent within the war veterans’ community, ZANU PF has announced that every war veteran in Zimbabwe will receive a free borehole at their home.
The initiative, spearheaded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, aims to alleviate water shortages and demonstrate the party’s concern for the welfare of its veteran supporters.
According to Cde Paul Tungwarara, Special Presidential Investment Advisor to the United Arab Emirates, the program will roll out in Mashonaland Central next week, marking the beginning of a nationwide effort to provide war veterans with access to reliable and clean water.
The announcement was made on ZANU PF’s official X account, with the party highlighting President Mnangagwa’s commitment to the well-being of Zimbabwe’s war heroes.
“President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has directed that each War Veteran have a borehole drilled at their home,” they stated.
However, the move has been seen by some as a desperate attempt by ZANU PF to pacify war veterans who have been vocal in their criticism of the party’s decision to extend President Mnangagwa’s term in office.
Sections of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association have publicly expressed concerns that the 2030 agenda could lead to further instability and even civil unrest, echoing warnings from opposition figures and civic organizations.
At a recent press conference, war veteran and ZANU PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza sparked controversy by calling for President Mnangagwa to step down, highlighting the growing divisions within the war veterans’ community.
The party’s efforts to address these concerns through the borehole initiative may be seen as a calculated move to maintain loyalty and buy time ahead of the 23 June general elections.
For now, the borehole program appears to be a gesture of goodwill from ZANU PF, aimed at reassuring war veterans that their party still values their contribution to the nation’s history and struggles.
