A 47-year-old officer of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), attached to the ZRP Support Unit, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly raping his Grade 7 daughter.

The disturbing case was heard in the Zvishavane Magistrates Court, where the court learned that the abuse began in August 2024. On one occasion, after returning home intoxicated, the officer forced himself on his young daughter.

Following the initial assault, he threatened the child against reporting the matter, warning her of unspecified consequences.

The abuse did not stop there; it continued into 2025.

The court was informed of another incident in January, where the accused fondled the victim and expressed further unwanted desires.

This assault was fortunately interrupted by the girl’s stepmother, but the father continued to intimidate his daughter into silence.

Eventually, the young girl gathered the courage to confide in friends and a teacher at her school, who assisted her in reporting the abuse to the authorities.

A subsequent medical examination confirmed the violations, leading to the officer’s arrest and conviction.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe condemned the incident, calling it a “shocking betrayal of trust by a man in a position of authority.”

The NPA emphasized the pressing need for continued efforts to combat gender-based violence and protect children, especially within their own families, where they should feel safest.

This case has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of children in environments that are meant to be protective, particularly when those in authority, such as law enforcement officers, are implicated in abuse.
