The Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project has entered its final stretch, with authorities confirming that 539.2 kilometres have now been completed and opened to traffic as of 30 November 2025.
The latest milestone includes the opening of 3.8km of four-lane roadway in the Ngundu section, further easing congestion and improving safety on one of Zimbabwe’s busiest trade corridors. The highway is a key segment of the North–South Corridor connecting Zimbabwe to South Africa, supporting regional commerce, tourism, and the movement of goods.
According to progress updates by the ministry of transport and infrastructure developments, six major contractors have contributed to the project, which has been underway for several years as part of the government’s infrastructure modernisation strategy.
Contractor achievements so far include:
- Bitumen World – 128.8 km
- Fossil Contracting – 122.6 km
- Masimba Holdings – 100 km
- Exodus & Co – 90.6 km
- Tensor Systems – 90 km
- Trial – 7.2 km
Collectively, the firms have delivered over 539km of upgraded road, leaving only 42.8km remaining for the project to reach full completion.
This progress is a significant step toward enhancing road safety, reducing travel times, and supporting trade between Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.
Once fully completed, the modernised highway is expected to strengthen Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure and contribute to achieving national development targets under Vision 2030.
