Retired Brigadier General Victor Rungani, an alleged key architect of electoral violence during Robert Mugabe’s presidency, has died, according to a social media announcement from the Children of War Veterans Association (COZWVA), where his son, Hardlife Rungani, is an active member.

Originally from Bikita in Masvingo province, Rungani was a prominent member of the Joint Operations Command (JOC), the military organ allegedly responsible for orchestrating ZANU PF’s violent electoral victories.

According to COZWVA, his most notorious involvement came during the disputed 2008 June Presidential run-off elections, where he was identified as a central figure in coordinating brutal attacks on opposition supporters, particularly in Mashonaland East.

The late strong man worked  alongside other senior military leaders, Rungani’s actions turned Zimbabwe’s rural areas into battlegrounds of fear and intimidation. This campaign, which included beatings, abductions, and coercive tactics to suppress the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), culminated in a strategy that forced opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to withdraw from the election.

Rungani’s death not only closes a chapter in his life but also revives the painful memories of the violence he is alleged to have perpetuated, highlighting the nation’s ongoing struggle with its tumultuous past. The 2008 shenanigans led to a Government of National Unity after the international community condemned the violence marred polls.

His legacy, like that of his fellow commanders, remains a haunting reminder of the atrocities committed under the guise of patriotism.
