BEITBRIDGE is rallying behind its own as Michelle Moyo, popularly known as Ritz Mcleish , earns a nomination at the prestigious National Arts Merit Awards NAMA24 People’s Choice Award set for 28 February.

Born and bred in Beitbridge, she is the only woman in a tough five-horse race dominated by entertainment heavyweights Jah Prayzah, Winky D, Prince Chigwida and comedy veteran Comic Elder.

Her nomination is being described as one of the biggest milestones for the Beitbridge entertainment industry.

Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Ritz expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“I feel happy to be nominated among big names in Zimbabwe. It’s a huge milestone for me, and representing my people means everything,” she said.

Despite facing criticism from some fans who argue she does not belong in the same category as established musicians and comedians, Ritz remains determined.

“The negative comments push me to be better. The fact that people are talking about me shows the impact I’ve made,” she added.

She urged fellow artists not to give up on their dreams and called on the Beitbridge community to vote for her.

“If I win, we all win,” she said.

Popular Afro-Dancehall artist Mark Geezo, real name Ragis Mundangu, a local musician who has collaborated with big names like Qounfuzed, said he is proud of her achievement.

“I am super excited about this milestone. Ritz is a hardworking lady. She deserves everything happening to her now. This is what we always prayed and hoped for when we started as musicians and content creators. The nomination says a lot about where we are heading as a town. It’s our time now,” he said.

Local DJ Shimza, real name Shimron Sibanda, who worked with Ritz in 2021, said he always believed in her potential.

“When she approached me with her script My Maid My Best Friend, I was happy to help direct the project and gather actors. I even took on the role of Gidza. I knew she was bound for greatness. I’m overjoyed to see her thriving and was elated when she got nominated for the NAMA awards,” he said.

House, Gqom and Kwaito artist Bhadilah real name Gift Lihlohonolo Ndlovu also praised her achievement.

“Watching a fellow female artist rise from the same streets that shaped us and stand on a national platform reminds me why we keep pushing and representing our home with heart. Her recognition celebrates the resilience and unstoppable spirit of Beitbridge artists,” he said.

TshiVenda hip-hop artist Prince Adrie, known for his hit “Nwana wamakalaha,” added his voice of support.

“As we say in Venda, ‘Zwahashu Zwiri Ita vhathu’ — you make us proud, Ritz! Go crush it, sis.”

As the awards night approaches, one message is clear Beitbridge stands firmly behind Ritz.
