THE Municipality of Beitbridge is set to establish an athletics club as preparations gather pace for the Beitbridge Mayor’s Half Marathon scheduled for June 6th.
The initiative comes in the wake of the municipality’s participation in the RIOT Marathon held in Beitbridge on Sunday April 19, where 11 runners represented the organisation.
The turnout reflects a growing interest in athletics within the town, with increased focus on promoting community fitness and a healthier lifestyle.
Speaking during the awarding ceremony at the RIOT Marathon, the town clerk, Mr Ramaqgapola, said the municipality’s intention to build on its momentum through the formation of an athletics club.
“As preparations begin ahead of the Beitbridge Mayor’s Half Marathon, municipality of Beitbridge is aiming to establish its own athletics club,” he said.
He also said his appreciation for the role played by the RIOT Marathon in fostering a culture of sport and wellness in the community.
“We acknowledge and highly support the good work done by the RIOT Marathon developing athletics sportsmanship in town, encouraging fitness and health amongst the society as the banner reads ‘running is our therapy’,” he said.
The planned athletics club is expected to create opportunities for athletes to train and compete, while also encouraging wider community participation in sporting activities.
The move is seen as part of broader efforts to promote fitness, strengthen local talent, and support a more active and healthier population in Beitbridge.
