Beitbridge town has been facing water supply challenges due the El Nino-induced drought as water levels have dropped in Dam 1 and Zhovhe dam, the two main water sources for the border municipality
The Chairperson of the finance committee, councilor John Manatsa highlighted that a combination of the drought and non paying residents has worsened the water situation in the town
“Before, I review the budget, regrettably due to the El Nino induced, water levels in Dam 1 dropped and water outflows from the off rivers storage reduced significantly which posed a significant strain on our water sources. The water levels at Zhovhe dam which we rely on to augment water in the off river storage was also affected by the drought, ” Manatsa said.
He also highlighted that there will be several measure to address the water crisis and also hoping for the rate payers to honour their debts in time.
“To manage the current water supply the council will distribute water equitably so thy at least each week residents will have access to water. Council is also making concerted efforts to ensure all rate payers honour debts for continuity of water supply and other services …”Chairperson councilor Manatsa said.
Meanwhile the Government of Zimbabwe has signed an agreement with its South African counterpart for Zimbabwe [Beitbridge] to supply water to the Musina. The Beitbridge municipality highlighted that if this succeeds it will give them extra needed revenue and hope it will bear fruits in 2025.
