The Bubi River Anti-Smuggling Task Force stationed at the Lion and Elephant Hotel intercepted a Gweru and a Masvingo woman allegedly in possession of a consignment of dagga in transit to their respective destinations.
The two, Fungai Dube, 50, of 2463 Mkoba in Gweru and Portia Mahapa, 45, of 3275 First Street Chesvingo, Masvingo, were intercepted on December 8 and handed over to police at Beitbridge
According to circumstances of the incident gleaned by Ziyah News Network, the cople aŕived at Bubi River checkpoint when they were arrested.
They were handed to the detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Beitbridge.
The two had boarded a SAN HE Logistics truck registration number AOB 5529 ZM at Lutumba bus stop, Beitbridge.
The truck towing a trailer registration number AOB 5550 ZM was being driven by Alex Simusokwe,43, of 227 Matelo Lusaka Zambia.
Dube and Mahapa were the only two passengers in the truck.
The task force team instructed the driver and accused persons to identify and hold their luggage during a search.
Dube, with a yellow bag, was searched, leading to the recovery of four cobs of dagga with an approximate total weight of 4,5 kilograms.
It was covered with packets of corn crisps called jiggies on top while Mahapa had a small black travelling bag searched leading to the recovery of one cob of dagga with an approximate weight of 0,5 kilograms covered with some grocery items on top.
The dagga was seized, and the accused persons were subsequently arrested.
The seized dagga has an approximate total weight of dagga was 5 kilograms with a street value of US$ 500-00.
terviews established Dube and Mahapa bought the dagga from an unknown male person based in South Africa and crossed the border through Parks’ illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River.
The two are expected to appear in court.
