Zimdancehall artist Kudakwashe Gift Hombarume, popularly known as Chillmaster, has been handed a nine-month driving ban after a court review of his sentencing in a fatal road accident case.

The ruling was delivered by a Mbare magistrate, following an order by Judge President Mary Zimba-Dube, who flagged major flaws in the original judgment and directed the lower court to re-examine the matter within 30 days.

The case stems from an accident on April 9, 2025, when Chillmaster, who was driving without a licence, lost control of his vehicle along New Chitungwiza Road. The car struck pedestrian Custon Charumbira, who died on the spot.

Legal analysts say the revised sentence reflects the judiciary’s insistence on accountability and proper judicial process, particularly in cases involving road fatalities and unlicensed drivers.

The tragedy has sparked renewed debate on Zimbabwe’s road safety crisis, with campaigners calling for stiffer penalties for unlicensed and reckless drivers.

Chillmaster, one of the rising names in the Zimdancehall scene, has not publicly commented on the latest ruling.
