Harare – Popular Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu has dismissed as false and malicious viral social media reports alleging that he made romantic advances toward former first lady Grace Mugabe.

Over the weekend, various online platforms circulated claims that Chimbetu had proposed to the widow of the late President Robert Mugabe following a supposed encounter in Mazowe. The reports further alleged that Grace Mugabe had filed a police report for harassment at a Harare police station.

However, according to Reports, Chimbetu categorically denied the allegations, calling them “a deliberate smear campaign.”

“I’m just seeing the messages and posts going viral about the allegations. It’s not true. Nothing of that sort has ever happened, and these are just people trying to create content in a bad way,” he said.

To date, there has been no confirmation from police regarding any such report, and Grace Mugabe has not commented on the matter.

The incident has reignited concerns about misinformation and character defamation on social media in Zimbabwe. Experts and authorities have repeatedly warned about the dangers of fake news, especially the use of artificial intelligence and unverified claims to manipulate public opinion or tarnish reputations.

Chimbetu is the latest in a growing list of public figures to fall victim to viral falsehoods, prompting renewed calls for stronger digital literacy, fact-checking practices, and ethical content sharing.

The allegations emerged just as Grace Mugabe celebrated her 60th birthday at a private, high-profile event over the weekend.

No legal action has been announced so far, but the musician’s camp has hinted at exploring possible steps to clear his name.
