Harare  — Zimbabwean actor Fanuel Tonganayi, famously known for his role as Firimoni in the hit comedy series Gringo, has tragically passed away.

His death comes just months after he publicly pleaded for financial assistance from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, a plea that went unanswered.

Tonganayi, who captured the hearts of audiences with his portrayal of the lovable but bumbling Firimoni, had been facing difficult times in recent years.

In a heartfelt video posted five months ago, he appealed to Chivayo for help, highlighting his struggles and seeking support. Despite the widespread circulation of the plea, no aid was provided, and Tonganayi’s health and circumstances appeared to deteriorate.

His iconic role as Firimoni made him a household name in Zimbabwe. Fans fondly remember his hilarious misadventures like being tricked onto a roof overnight or getting stung by bees while climbing a tree that left viewers in stitches. Tonganayi’s natural comedic timing and relatable performance cemented his place in Zimbabwean TV history.

Interestingly, Tonganayi never initially set out to be an actor. He joined Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) in 1993 as a driver and was called upon to replace an actor at the last minute, stepping into the role of Firimoni.

 His spontaneous entry into acting proved to be a defining moment in his life, bringing him fame and adoration.

Despite his success on screen, Tonganayi faced financial hardships later in life. After leaving ZBC, he turned to farming in Hurungwe, where he cultivated tobacco and operated a grinding mill endeavors that could not fully sustain him amid tough economic times.

His recent plea for help and subsequent passing have left fans mourning not only the entertainer but also the man behind the laughter someone who, despite bringing joy and laughter to many, battled adversity in his final days.

As Zimbabweans remember Fanuel Tonganayi, they celebrate his contribution to local comedy and his enduring legacy as Firimoni, a character etched into the hearts of many.
