Harare — In a move aimed at boosting transparency and empowering citizens, Zimbabwe has launched its Open Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Data Portal, providing a centralized platform for tracking the nation’s progress toward its development targets.

The initiative seeks to foster greater accountability, foster inclusive decision-making, and attract investment by making crucial data accessible to all stakeholders.

The launch, held on Wednesday, was marked by a speech from Public Works, Labour and Social Welfare Permanent Secretary Simon Masanga, speaking on behalf of Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya.

“Open data is not just about transparency; it’s about giving citizens the tools to understand and participate in their country’s growth,” Masanga said.

“This portal will enable ordinary Zimbabweans, civil society, and development partners to access real-time information on our development trajectory, fostering a culture of active engagement and shared responsibility.”

Dr. Rushwaya highlighted that the portal is more than a data repository it’s a catalyst for innovation and collaborative problem-solving.

“By providing user-friendly visualizations, downloadable datasets, and mapping tools, we’re equipping everyone with the insights needed to identify challenges and co-create solutions,” he explained.

The platform aims to bridge gaps in data availability, especially in social, economic, and environmental sectors, enabling policymakers and citizens alike to make informed decisions.

It also aligns Zimbabwe with global best practices, inspired by successful models like the UN’s Open SDG Data Hub and other regional initiatives.

Participants at the event included government officials, UN representatives, private sector leaders, civil society groups, and data experts all united in their commitment to harnessing open data for sustainable growth.

“Building ecosystems of accountability, transparency, and innovation is essential for achieving our SDGs,” Dr. Rushwaya concluded.

“Zimbabwe’s OpenSDG portal is a strategic step toward realizing a more inclusive, data-driven future where every voice counts in shaping national development.”
