RURAL District Council Chair Oscar Chiromo has warned young people against drug abuse, saying it threatens the values that secured Zimbabwe’s independence.
Speaking during the Independence Flame lighting ceremony in Lutumba on Saturday, Chiromo told youths that substance abuse could derail the country’s future.
He said if liberation fighters had engaged in drugs during the struggle, Zimbabwe would not be celebrating its independence today.
“If those who fought for our independence had taken drugs, we would not be here standing and celebrating this day,” said Chiromo.
He said young people to should stay away from drugs and uphold the discipline and commitment demonstrated by the country’s freedom fighters.
Chiromo also said the hosting of the Independence Flame in Lutumba marks a significant moment for Beitbridge and Matabeleland South, as the province continues to gain national recognition.
He said the development aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind, which seeks to ensure inclusive national development.
He added that all residents of Beitbridge have been invited to attend this year’s Independence Day celebrations, which will be held in Maphisa Matabeleland South.
The Independence Flame was first lit in Zezani on Friday and is expected to travel across all seven districts of Matabeleland South province ahead of the national celebrations.
The initiative is part of efforts to bring the commemorations closer to communities while promoting unity and shared national pride.
Matabeleland South’s selection to host this year’s Independence Day celebrations reflects a broader government thrust to rotate national events across provinces, giving previously marginalised areas an opportunity to participate more directly in key national milestones.
Zimbabwe celebrates its Independence Day annually on April 18, marking the end of colonial rule in 1980.
The commemorations are a reminder of the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle and a call for citizens to contribute to national development.
