Matthew Lani, a former South African TikTok creator who gained fame for his health-related content, has admitted to fabricating his identity as “Dr. Matthew.” Speaking candidly for the first time during an interview on the Engineer Your Life Podcast, Lani opened up about the personal and professional struggles that arose from his deception, including battles with health and financial instability.
Lani disclosed that his identity as a doctor was fictitious, having constructed a false name, surname, and ID number, even going so far as to forge a signature to lend credibility to his persona.
“The ‘Dr. Matthew’ persona was never about deceiving anyone, but rather an attempt to make health education, particularly around HIV, more relatable,” he explained, asserting that his ultimate goal was educational rather than fraudulent.
Despite the backlash and condemnation from the Department of Health regarding his impersonation, Lani described the public scrutiny as “ridiculous,” claiming that he believed he was shielded by supporting evidence for his intentions.
However, he recognized the gravity of the situation, confessing that the fallout had profound consequences on his life.
Lani revealed that he is living with HIV, a diagnosis he received after being intentionally infected by a former partner. He accused this individual, whom he referred to as a “serial cheater,” of deliberately transmitting the virus to him.
Lani pursued legal action against his ex-partner, which culminated in a private prosecution and a civil case where he was awarded nearly R1 million in damages. However, he noted that the emotional aftermath far outweighed any financial gain.
The exposure of his fabricated persona led to significant personal turmoil. The public fallout resulted in financial devastation, forcing Lani to leave his apartment, car, and other belongings.
By March of this year, he was compelled to move in with his mother in Windsor East, Johannesburg. While grateful for the shelter, he faced ongoing instability in their living situation.
Things took a further turn for the worse in July when the property owner issued an eviction notice to Lani’s mother, deepening their uncertainty. The combined challenges of homelessness and the emotional toll from his public scandal have left Lani struggling to rebuild his life.
Reflecting on the situation, Lani expressed remorse for the unintended repercussions of his actions, admitting that his pursuit of fame significantly contributed to his downfall. He initially aimed to simplify complex health topics for a broader audience, but acknowledged that his methods became increasingly muddled as his popularity soared.
