HUNDREDS of unemployed residents from Beitbridge on Thursday gathered at the site of a new construction company contracted to develop the town’s new Central Business District (CBD), hoping to get jobs.

The recruitment exercise attracted both men and women, with aspirants aged 18 years and above turning up in large numbers to register for various positions.

Available opportunities included general hand jobs, driving and other construction-related duties.

Unlike formal job applications that often require detailed Curriculum Vitaes (CVs), the company only requested basic information such as full names, age and phone numbers from the applicants.

More than 100 residents reportedly participated in the process.

Speaking during the recruitment, Tiger Eye Construction Company General Project Manager, Takudzwa Pfigu, said the company initially intends to employ at least 100 local residents.

“For now, we only want 100 people whom we will be able to work with. This project will benefit the community a lot because it is creating jobs,” said Pfigu.

“The good thing is that even after this phase of the project is completed, more opportunities will still come when the construction of buildings starts and we will employ more people.”

Pfigu said the company arrived in Beitbridge with only 10 skilled personnel who understand the blueprint of the project and will work together with the newly employed local workers.

Residents who attended the recruitment exercise expressed hope that the project would help ease unemployment challenges in the border town.

One of the applicants, Maria Sibanda, said she would be happy if she gets selected.

“I hope I get among the people needed. I have been moving around looking for work and there are no jobs available. Thanks to this company, at least we now have somewhere to start,” she said.

Another applicant, Talent Moyo, said the process was simpler than expected.

“Yes, I applied. I thought they required proper CVs but it was just word of mouth. I hope to be called because I feel fit for the vacancy and I am capable. Most of the time I am at home doing nothing and I still depend on my parents,” he said.

The proposed CBD development project is expected to bring significant economic activity to Beitbridge, with many residents hopeful that it will open doors for long-term employment and business opportunities in the area.
