The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has announced the successful restoration of Hwange Unit 6.

The successful reactivation of Unit 6 at Hwange Thermal Power Station, injected an additional 120 megawatts into the national electricity grid.

The unit one of eight at the country’s largest coal-fired power station had been offline for an extended period due to technical issues.

The return signals progress in stabilising the country’s electricity supply amid widespread load shedding and rising energy demand.

In a statement on Tuesday dated October 14 ,ZESA Holdings said the unit has been synchronised to the national grid and is now contributing positively to overall generation capacity.

ZESA also acknowledged the patience shown by consumers during the downtime .

“We extend our appreciation to all stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the outage period,” ZESA in the statement.

Hwange Power Station remains the key pillar of Zimbabwe’s energy infrastructure, and the restoration of Unit 6 further reinforces its strategic importance.

The station is currently leading national output, with ongoing maintenance work on another unit also said to be progressing according to schedule.

According to the latest figures from the Zimbabwe Power Company, Hwange generated 1,090 megawatts on Tuesday.

This was supported by Kariba South Hydroelectric Station, which supplied 488 megawatts, and Independent Power Producers contributing 55 megawatts—bringing the total national output to 1,633 megawatts.

The utility continues to prioritise the rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure at Hwange, as the country pushes to reduce electricity deficits and support industrial, commercial, and residential energy needs.
