Harare –The Ministry of Information, Communication, Telecommunication, Postal and Courier Services, unveiled the vision for Zimbabwe’s digital future during the launch of the NetOne 5G Base Station at the Boka Tobacco Auction Floors in Harare South, representing a crucial step in the nation’s pursuit of its Vision 2030 goals aimed at elevating Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy through leveraging on the ICT.
Among the highlights of the Minister Tatenda Mavetera’s address was the bold target to achieve 100% internet penetration by 2028, positioning Zimbabwe to become one of the most connected nations in Africa and underscoring the trans-formative potential of connectivity for economic development and social inclusion.
“This initiative is not just about technology; it is about empowering our people and ensuring that everyone has access to the digital world,” she stated.
In addition to this ambitious internet penetration goal, the Minister announced a strategy to achieve 100% mobile network coverage by 2026, ensuring that every citizen can access reliable communication services, which is particularly significant as it aims to bridge the digital divide and provide undeserved communities with opportunities to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
Dr. Mavetera also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the roll out of 5G technology, which is expected to revolutionize connectivity and foster the development of innovative applications across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and agriculture.
“5G will not only enhance our communication infrastructure but also serve as a catalyst for technological innovation,” she noted.
Central to her vision is the development of a comprehensive national AI strategy, positioning Zimbabwe as a leader in artificial intelligence adoption and innovation within Africa.
“We aim to harness the power of AI to drive efficiency and improve service delivery,” Dr. Mavetera stated.
To cultivate local talent and entrepreneurship, the Minister announced plans to enhance ICT innovation hubs designed to nurture a culture of technological entrepreneurship.
“By commercializing innovations from these hubs, we can create jobs and stimulate economic growth,” she explained.
Recognizing the vital importance of security in the digital age, Dr. Mavetera emphasized the need for a robust cybersecurity framework to safeguard national digital infrastructure and protect citizens’ data.
“As we advance, ensuring the security of our digital environment is paramount,” she cautioned.
The launch of the NetOne 5G Base Station signifies a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation journey, and with the government’s strategic initiatives, including the ambitious target for 100% internet penetration by 2028, Zimbabwe is set to harness technology as a powerful driver of economic growth and improved quality of life for all its citizens.
