The University of South Africa (UNISA) has officially dismissed claims that Walter Magaya, a Zimbabwean national, graduated or studied at the institution.
In a statement issued Wednesday, UNISA’s Senior Media Officers, Tommy Huma and Edgar Rathelela, addressed growing controversy surrounding Magaya’s alleged diploma and PhD.
“The University of South Africa (UNISA) notes with serious concern information circulating in the public domain, as well as a recent video on social media, suggesting that Walter Magaya is a graduate or alumnus of the university,” the statement reads.
The university’s response follows an inquiry from investigative journalist Maynard Manyowa, who sought to verify the authenticity of Magaya’s qualifications.
UNISA confirmed that their records do not show any indication of registration or graduation for Magaya.
“Based on the information provided by the media platform, UNISA’s system could not find any record showing that Mr. Magaya was ever registered or graduated. This effectively means that UNISA does not have Mr. Magaya either as a student or a graduate. Any certificates he produces claiming to be from UNISA are therefore fraudulent,” the statement elaborated.
Furthermore, UNISA refuted claims made by Magaya regarding an honorary doctorate supposedly conferred upon him, stating, “The university has never conferred any honorary doctorate on Mr. Magaya and strongly condemns this false claim.”
In light of the situation, UNISA has indicated its intention to pursue legal action against Magaya, aiming to protect its reputation.
“We believe that conduct of this nature damages and brings our brand into disrepute, and we reserve the right to take appropriate corrective action.
