The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has appointed Romanian football tactician Marian (Mario) Marinica as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe senior men’s national team, the Warriors, on a one-year contract.
The announcement, made by ZIFA on Tuesday, marks the beginning of what the association calls a new era for Zimbabwean football, as Marinica brings vast international experience and a proven record in transforming underdog teams into continental competitors.
A UEFA Pro Licensed coach the highest qualification in world football Marinica boasts over 25 years of technical and managerial experience across four continents Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.
He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching from South Bank University in England and a Diploma in Management, a blend that demonstrates both technical depth and leadership acumen.
Marinica’s coaching resume is extensive.
At national level, he has previously managed Liberia and Malawi, guiding the latter to a historic Round of 16 finish at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations their best ever performance. Under his stewardship, Liberia became the highest climber in the FIFA Rankings in June 2024.
At club level, Marinica has coached several top tier teams including Rapid București, Gloria, Bazau, Sportul Studentesc,Arges, Pitesti, Rocar Bucuresti, and Cimentul Fieni in his native Romania. His international club career spans Kerala Blasters in India, Azam FC in Tanzania, Black Leopards in South Africa, Zakho FC in Iraq, and Kaposvári Rákóczi FC in Hungary.
In England, he worked with Crystal Palace FC and Arsenal FC’s academies as well as Leyton Orient FC’s School of Excellence. Before turning to coaching, Marinica played for Romanian giants Rocar București, Dinamo București, and Steaua București.
ZIFA President Ngobile Magwizi expressed optimism about the appointment, saying Marinica’s blend of international experience and modern football philosophy would elevate the Warriors to new heights.
“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe. His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era,” Magwizi said.
“His appointment reflects ZIFA’s commitment to building a competitive and sustainable football structure that delivers results both on and off the pitch.”
Beyond coaching, Marinica has also served as a Technical Director, Coach Educator and Performance Consultant. He is renowned for promoting grassroots development, nurturing local coaches, and integrating diaspora talent goals that align with ZIFA’s long-term football development strategy.
Marinica is expected to assume his duties immediately, beginning preparations for Zimbabwe’s upcoming friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar and to spearhead the team’s campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His appointment brings renewed hope among local football fans eager to see the Warriors reclaim their status as one of Africa’s competitive sides.
