A 53-year-old truck driver Pardon Sibanda, has been fined US$300 by the Masvingo Magistrate’s Court for possession of unspecified medicine for sale.
Court proceedings state that ZRP officers were conducting an anti-smuggling operation at a roadblock 110 km along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway when they stopped a truck being driven by Sibanda, who is employed by Avecs Transport of 121 Moredwood road Durban South-Africa.
Upon searching the truck, which was transporting six new D4D Toyota Hilux GD6 vehicles from Durban destined for Zambia, the officers discovered and seized 400 x 100ml bottles of Broncleer cough syrup and 60 x 100ml bottles of Astra pain cough syrup concealed within three of the new vehicles.
The truck driver was arrested and the unspecified medicines with an estimated street value of US$1500-00, were seized.
Sibanda had no legal right to possess the medicines without a license or permit from the regulating authority hence his arrest and subsequent conviction.
