The Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 20-year-old man to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing his 9-year-old niece, in a case that has drawn strong condemnation from both the courts and the community.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offence occurred on 27 June 2025 in Nyumbane Village, Matobo District, when the man unlawfully engaged in sexual intercourse with the child. Legally, the minor was incapable of giving consent, making the act a clear violation of the law.
The incident came to light on 29 June 2025 after the child disclosed the abuse to a family elder, who immediately facilitated the reporting of the matter to the police. The accused was promptly arrested and brought before the courts.
Following the trial, the magistrate imposed a 15-year custodial sentence, underscoring the seriousness with which the justice system views crimes against children.
In its statement, the NPAZ stressed that the ruling sends a strong deterrent message:
“Crimes against children will be met with the full weight of the law. Communities are encouraged to safeguard minors and report such violations without delay.”
The case has been described as a reminder that protecting children is a collective responsibility that requires vigilance from families, communities, and institutions alike.
