Zimbabwe’s senior women’s football team, the Mighty Warriors, faced a setback with a 1-0 defeat against Mozambique in the Hollywood COSAFA 2024 tournament.
In the 18th minute of the first half, Mozambique’s Aurora Ngale found the back of the net after the Mighty Warriors failed to defend against a corner kick.
During the second half, the Mighty Warriors fought hard in search of an equalizer, displaying positive performances and creating several scoring opportunities. However, they endured a frustrating defeat, unable to capitalize on their efforts and chances.
The Mighty Warriors’ loss in their opening match has placed them in a challenging situation. Zimbabwe’s path to the knockout stages is now compromised; they must defeat Lesotho by a margin of at least two goals in their final group stage match. Additionally, they are reliant on Lesotho to defeat Mozambique in order to secure a spot in the knockout stage.
Currently, Mozambique leads Group D with three points, while the Mighty Warriors sit at the bottom with zero points and a goal difference of minus one.
Importantly, only the group leaders will qualify for the knockout stages, meaning the Mighty Warriors’ loss leaves them with diminished control over their fate; they can only hope for Lesotho to overcome Mozambique.
In other action on Match Day 2 of Group A, Eswatini prepares to face South Africa after defeating Seychelles 6-0. South Africa, having won their opening match against Namibia, will be looking for a second victory.
