Starlink has begun the disconnection process for its Roaming subscribers in Zimbabwe, a move that has left many users in distress and is affecting potentially thousands who have failed to transfer their accounts to the country. This development represents a setback for both individuals and businesses that relied on Starlink’s satellite internet services for connectivity.
Before obtaining official licensing in Zimbabwe, many Starlink users procured their equipment in neighboring countries like Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. Taking advantage of the Roaming package, these subscribers were able to access high-speed internet services across borders with relative ease.
It is estimated that around 5,000 subscribers were utilizing the Roam plan, making it a vital resource for internet access in the region.
Following its official licensing in Zimbabwe, Starlink issued a notice to Roaming subscribers urging them to transfer their accounts to a local plan within 60 days to avoid disconnection.
As the deadline passed, reports indicate confusion and frustration among users, many of whom faced payment challenges and connectivity congestion in bustling Harare.
The affected subscribers expressed their dismay and confusion over the abrupt disconnections.
“I’ve been using Starlink since I bought my kit in Zambia. I followed all the instructions, but transferring my account was an ordeal,” lamented some user
Another user, who operates a small online business, shared similar frustrations.
“Starlink was my lifeline for communication and transactions. The deadline was not clear, and there were so many issues with the payment process. Now I feel abandoned,” she said.
While Starlink’s intentions may have been to streamline operations and comply with local regulations, the abrupt transition has left many users in limbo as they scramble to navigate payment and connectivity hurdles. The company has not specified how many of the estimated 5,000 subscribers successfully transferred their accounts before the deadline.
