The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Hon. Felix Mhona has urged the drivers to adhere to road traffic rules and exercise caution on the road, he was speaking in the wake of the fatal accident which occurred in Kuwadzana, Harare yesterday.
The fatal crash occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the Kuwadzana 7 turn off around 05:00 in the morning, resulting in six people dying at the spot whilst five others were injured when the driver of a commuter omnibus failed to give way and collided with haulage truck. Another person succumbed to injuries later to bring the toll to seven.
The crash was caused by the driver of a commuter omnibus failing to give way and colliding with a haulage truck, despite functioning traffic lights at the intersection.
“The accident is yet another call to all transport operators, motorists, and members of the public to adhere to road traffic rules and exercise caution on the road. Whilst the traffic lights at the intersection were working, it is concerning to note that the driver of the commuter omnibus proceeded when he was supposed to stop,” said Minister Mhona
He further mention that “this was reckless and thus a blatant violation of our road traffic rules and regulations. Consequently, the driver is being charged with culpable homicide. 1 wish to remind and warn all transport operators, motorists, and members of the public that the Ministry will take stern measures to preserve the safety and security of the commuting public.”
Mhona assured the nation that the Second Republic is committed to formulating robust legal, policy and administrative mechanisms to improve the country’s Road Safety Performance.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has issued a heartfelt condolence message, mourning the loss of young lives and expressing solidarity with the bereaved families.
