THE Municipality of Beitbridge has launched a waste segregation initiative aimed at improving waste management and promoting environmental sustainability across the border town.
The programme comes on the heels of the successful Beitbridge Mayor’s Half Marathon, with municipal authorities seeking to channel the same community spirit towards creating a cleaner and greener environment.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the municipality said it was moving “from the Marathon to a Cleaner, Greener Beitbridge” through the introduction of a comprehensive waste management programme.
To kick-start the initiative, the municipality’s Environmental Health Section conducted a hands-on training session for employees at the main municipal offices, where a new colour-coded waste bin system was unveiled.

According to the municipality, yellow bins will be used for cans, red bins for glass, green bins for food waste, blue bins for plastic waste and black bins for general waste.
“To kickstart the campaign, our Environmental Health section just conducted a hands-on training session for municipal employees at the main office. We have officially introduced a new, color-coded bin system at our headquarters,” reads part of the post.
Municipal workers were also trained on what authorities described as the core “4 Rs of Waste Management” Refuse, Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.
The initiative is set to expand beyond municipal offices, with plans already underway to install waste sorting bins across business centres, industrial areas, schools, churches, gated communities and residential suburbs.
“We aren’t stopping at the main office! We are actively preparing to roll these specialized sorting bins out across the entire town,” the municipality said.

Authorities also revealed plans to establish designated waste sorting and recycling sites throughout Beitbridge to ensure that recyclable materials are properly processed.
Furthermore, a Waste Characterisation Survey will be conducted before the end of the year to assess local waste generation patterns and strengthen future environmental planning.
The municipality said the initiative forms part of a broader vision to make Beitbridge a model town for sustainable development.
“A clean environment starts with the choices we make every day. Let’s carry the team spirit of the Mayor’s Marathon into making Beitbridge a model sustainable town,” the post read.
The waste segregation programme is expected to improve recycling rates, reduce pollution and promote community participation in environmental conservation efforts across the town.
