A high-profile Zimbabwean academic and public official has died under tragic circumstances following a deadly domestic dispute.

Martin Muduva, a commissioner with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) and a Midlands State University (MSU) lecturer, was brutally attacked at his Dzivarasekwa Extension home on Tuesday night.

Sources reveal that a heated argument broke out between Muduva and his first wife allegedly fueled by his recent decision to take a second wife.

During the altercation, Muduva was struck twice with an axe.

He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.

Immediately following the attack, his wife ingested poison and died that same night.

Police are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide, though an official statement is pending.

The ZHRC expressed deep grief over the tragedy.

“The death of commissioner Muduva is a devastating loss to the commission and to all those who had the privilege of working with him,” said ZHRC in a statement.

Appointed to the ZHRC in December 2024, Muduva was an indispensable figure in Zimbabwe’s technology, academic, and human rights landscapes.
