THE youngest son of former Zimbabwe president the late Robert Mugabe has been arrested in South Africa after a gardener was shot at his home, police said.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is scheduled to appear at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

His lawyer, Ashley Mugiya, told the Associated Press that Mugabe was one of two men detained and questioned on Thursday.

South African police later confirmed that both men were arrested and will face charges of attempted murder.

Authorities said an employee at the house suffered a single gunshot wound and is in critical condition.

It is not clear how many shots were fired.

According to the State-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the shooting took place at Mugabe’s home in an upscale suburb of Johannesburg.

Photos published by IOL News showed the 29-year-old in handcuffs being led away by police.

Mugabe is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe, who died in Singapore in 2019, and his second wife, Grace Mugabe.

Members of the Mugabe family have faced legal issues in recent years.

In 2024, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe was arrested on allegations of assaulting a policeman at a roadblock in Beitbridge.

He was released on bail but never again appeared at the Beitbridge court where a warran for his arrest was issued.

He faced charges of disorderly conduct and possession of prohibited knives.

His brother, Robert Mugabe Jr, was fined $300 last year after admitting to possessing marijuana in Zimbabwe.

In 2017, Grace Mugabe was accused of assaulting Gabriella Engels in a hotel room in Johannesburg. Engels claimed Mugabe beat her with an electric extension cord.

Grace Mugabe denied the allegation, saying she acted in self-defense after the model, who she described as intoxicated, attacked her in a room where her two sons were staying.

She was initially required to appear in court but was later granted diplomatic immunity.
