The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 41-year-old Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa following the fatal shooting of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati on Sunday morning.

In a statement on Monday dated October 27 2025 police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mutasa opened fire at the police station, killing Constable Muchechesi in an attempt to evade arrest.

Mutasa was wanted in connection with the murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura, shot and killed in August 2025 during what police described as a planned robbery.

Mutangadura, a prominent businessman in the mining and transport sectors, was reportedly ambushed by armed men while driving near Kadoma.

Investigations later linked Mutasa to the shooting, prompting a nationwide manhunt.

Nyathi said Detective Constable Ngwenya of the CID Homicide Section was part of a police team that attempted to arrest Mutasa at Sanyati.

During the operation, Mutasa allegedly opened fire, shooting Detective Constable Ngwenya before turning his gun on Constable Muchechesi, who was stationed at the charge office.

“After shooting Constable Muchechesi, the suspect went on to rob Abraham Mayavo (30) of five United States dollars as he was in the process of making a report to the police,” said Nyathi.

Following the incident, police immediately launched a manhunt across Sanyati and surrounding areas.

Members of the public from Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway responded to police alerts and helped track down and apprehend the suspect.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari and Patchway who quickly mobilized and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect,” Nyathi said.

Mutasa is now in police custody and is expected to face charges related to murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

“The police will release more details in due course ,” Nyathi said
